Saving Your Search and Creating an Automatic Email Alert (video tutorial)

  1. Sign into My NCBI.
  2. Run your search using any terms and limits needed for your topic.
  3. Click 'Create alert' link, under the PubMed search box.

        4. Your search strategy will appear next to a box labeled 'Name of saved search.' 

       5. Edit the search name to something short, yet meaningful, e.g. late life depression (100 character maximum).

        6. Click the 'Save' button.

        7. To sign up for automatic email updates of new search results, fill in the 'Saved Search Settings' form. Options can be set for update frequency, zero results notification, report format, etc.

        8. Click 'Save.'

        9. Repeat the process for any additional searches, then click on 'Sign Out.'

Filter Preferences to Show Asc Wis Online Fulltext Links

This filter adds Ascension (AW)  full text journal links to PubMed when you are signed in to MyNCBI. 

Configuring MyNCBI to show Ascension Wisconsin (AW) holdings and journal article icons requires following these steps only one time.   The AW preferences should then remain and appear each time you log in.

1. Click on MyNCBI at top right of the PubMed window.

Click on Dashboard.

2. Click on 'NCBI Site Preferences' near the top right of the window.

 

3.  Click on 'Outside Tool' under PubMed Preferences on the left.

 

4.   Choose A and Use Control+F to find Ascension Wisconsin.

Choose Ascension Wisconsin and click the radio button to the left to automatically save.  

Note: You will NOT have access to other Ascension Library resources unless you are part of those local markets.  

 

Search Filters

Tailor Your PubMed Search Experience with MyNCBI (8 min. video)

Filters group search results by areas of interest, such as Review. Filtered results with their respective counts for the current search display as links on the right side of the web page. Click on the link to display the citations grouped by that filter.

See below for directions on adding AW Online Links and Clinical Queries, Subsets and other PubMed search filters

 

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. Click on the Manage Filters link at the bottom of the Filters box.  Check that the "Filters for" pulldown list shows PubMed.
  3. Under Browse/Search for PubMed Filters choose from 4 categories (Popular, LinkOut, Properties or Links) or search for a specific filter.
  4. Your filter selections are in effect only when you are signed in to My NCBI.

PubMed Medline

Tips for local Ascension Maryland users:

  1. If you use the PubMed links on the Asc. WI Library pages, you'll tap into our fulltext offerings.  
  2. If we don't have online access to a particular article, you'll be able to order it easily through PubMed by clicking on the Ascension icon. 

My NCBI

My NCBI is your personal space on the NLM computer system for saving searches, search results, PubMed preferences, and for creating automatic email alerts. Click on the My NCBI link at the top right of the PubMed window to get started.

PubMed MyNCBI: Registration is required (available at no charge).

Note:  To use My NCBI, you must have cookies enabled to allow pop-up windows from ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

Managing Searches

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. At the bottom of the Saved Searches box, click on  Manage Saved Searches:

3. The Last Searched column displays when the last update was generated either automatically or manually. Hover your mouse over the information to display the explicit date.

4. Click the check box next to a search.

5. Click the What's New button at the bottom of the page to check for new results: 

6. To display the new items, click the 'New items' link. This also updates the saved search with the current date and time: 

Note: To run a saved search without update limits:

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. Under Saved Searches, click the saved search you want to run. This will not modify the Last Searched date and time for the saved search.

Saving Results in Collections and My Bibliography

Collections:

To save selected search results:

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. Run a search and on the results page, select the citations you want to save using the check boxes. If you do not select any items, all results up to 5000 items will be sent to Collections.   

3. Under the Send to drop-down menu, select Collections. 

4.   On the 'Save Collection' window, you may create a new collection or append to an existing collection. Enter a collection name.

PubMed Search Filter Preferences

PubMed Search Filter Preferences allow you have links to PubMed searches limited by commonly used search filters.  Popular search filters include:

  • Language
  • Clinical Queries Categories
  • Publication Types
  • Ages, etc.  

PubMed displays links for searches with selected filters such as publication type (ie Reviews), and Subsets (ie Systematic Reviews).  

To show additional filters (such as for Clinical Queries) on your personal MyNCBI page follow the directions below.  

Note:  Citations that are not indexed will NOT be included in these results. 

  1. Log in to MyNCBI.
  2. Click on the manage filters link at the bottom of the Filters box on the MyNCBI homepage.
  3. Under Browse/Search for PubMed Filters click the radio button to the left of Properties  in Select Category section.
  4. Click the plus sign [+] next to Clinical Queries to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes. 
  5. Click the plus sign [+] next to Publication Types to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes. 
  6. Click the plus sign [+] next to Subsets to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes.

My NCBI Preferences allow you to activate search term highlighting, save shared settings, change the display of the links menu, and turn off the AutoSuggest feature, display preferences when in PubMed and preferences for other Entrez databases.

  1. Sign in to My NCBI and click NCBI Site Preferences near the top right of the page.
  2. Select the Common Preference you would like to activate and click on the link.
  3. 'Highlighting' allows you to choose a color to have your search terms highlighted.
